The program offers various private-key encryption algorithms, such as DES (Data Encryption Standard), 3DES (Triple Data Encryption Algorithm), RC2 (Ron's Code or Rivest Cipher) and AES (Advanced Encryption Standard). The last one is the strongest encryption method, used in various financial and public institutions where confidential information is important.

The menu of MultiCrypt is easy to use even for those who are not acquainted with this type of software.
In the "File" tab you can select a single file or an entire directory folder if there is more than one document that needs protection.
In the "Options" tab you can locate a file using the built-in file browser or simply drag and drop all the files you want to protect.
The "Help" menu offers you all the required information about the 4 types of encryption provided by the application, available on Wikipedia articles.
The first one and the most basic is DES, a symmetric-key algorithm for encrypting data using a 56-bit key size. It requires exactly 8 characters in order for the program to work.
The second is RC2, a 64-bit block cipher with a variable key size. It needs between 8 and 16 characters.
The third one is AES, a family of ciphers with different key and block sizes. This one requires between 16 and 32 characters for file encryption.
The last one is 3DES, which applies the Data Encryption Standard cipher algorithm three times to each data block. It also needs between 16 and 32 characters.
After selecting the input file you want to encrypt, you can select the output location where the new file will be created, along with the encryption format and an initial vector of at least 8 characters to enhance file protection.
The utility can be asked to automatically remove the original files after encryption, in order to prevent other PC users from accessing your personal and unprotected files.
The file decryption process is the same. In addition to the password, it's necessary to set all the other details about the previous file encryption task, namely the initial vector and encryption method.
The software application is fast and easy to use. For inexperienced users, it may take a while to learn what every type of encryption does, the password and vector are case sensitive, and we had compatibility issues with MultiCrypt Serial on Windows 8 in our tests.
