Just make sure that the device is not write-protected, since it's necessary to update its .ini configuration file with your settings. On the other hand, it doesn't add new entries to the Windows registry or need any DLLs to run.
Once launched, Starter Portable creates an icon in the system tray and access its .ini file to get the list with programs and categories. It has some paths set by default in downloader, messenger, developer and other groups, such as FlashGet, uTorrent, Skype and Picasa.
The main window can be moved to any part of the screen and resized, while the original dimensions and position can be restore to default from the tray icon's right-click menu.
In order to configure settings, you have to open the configuration file in a text editor. By mimicking the format established by the tool, you can edit the existing entries and add new ones when it comes to programs (.exe files) and categories, whether they are installed or portable.
It didn't put a strain on the computer's performance in our tests, thanks to the fact that it needed a low amount of CPU and RAM. We haven't come across any stability issues, since it didn't freeze, crash or display error dialogs.
Casual users may find it inconvenient to edit the .ini file when adding new programs and categories to the list. However, it's easy once you get the hang of it.
