As far as the interface is concerned, Desktop Timer has a small frame with a dark background, green numbers and orange arrows. Overall, it has a rudimentary look but it's very easy to tinker with.
It's not possible to type numbers in the hour, minute and second boxes. Instead, you can click the up, down, left and right arrows to increase or decrease time by 1 or 10 units.
By default, the utility gets minimized to the taskbar after triggering the option, but this can be disabled. Once time expires, it reappears on the screen and shakes once to draw your attention.
It also has three media player buttons listed for starting, pausing and stopping the timer. Apart from the fact that you can consult a help section with graphical instructions, there are no other notable options available.
As we expected, it left a small footprint on the computer's performance in our testing, thanks to the fact that it required a low amount of CPU and RAM to work properly. It ran smoothly, without freezing, crashing or indicating errors.
On the other hand, Desktop Timer Serial hasn't received updates for a long time and features just a handful of options for configuring a countdown timer. Nevertheless, it gets the job done and can be used for free.
